Studio or Outdoor Pet Photography - Which is Right for Your Pet?

Every pet is different, which means there's no single answer to this question. Some dogs thrive outdoors with plenty of space to explore, while others are calmer and more comfortable in the quiet environment of a studio. The best setting is the one that allows your pet's personality to shine.

The Studio

A studio session removes distractions and allows the focus to remain entirely on your pet. It's ideal for creating timeless portraits with beautiful lighting and a clean, uncluttered look.

Many owners worry that their dog won't settle in a studio. In reality, most dogs quickly relax once they realise it's simply another interesting place to explore.

Cats also tend to do particularly well in a calm studio environment where there are fewer unfamiliar sights and sounds.

The Outdoors

If your dog loves adventure, an outdoor session can be the perfect choice.

Whether it's the beach, the desert or a favourite walking trail, outdoor locations provide space to move naturally and capture those joyful moments that reflect your dog's personality.

The changing light also adds warmth and atmosphere that can make every portrait feel unique.

In the UAE we also have to be aware that not all locations allow dogs, and some venues require shoot permits which are rather a cumbersome affair to obtain.  And of course we cannot forget about the wonderful warm summers in the UAE, and the rainy and cold days of Portugal.  But that is not a reason not to shoot outdoors, we can always reschedule or shoot in the shade, at the beginning or end of the day. 

There Isn't a Wrong Choice

People often ask me which option I recommend.

My answer is always the same: it depends entirely on your pet and where you intend to display the images.  Outdoor images for me are like a story and I love to display these in an album.  Studio images lend themselves to wall art and they are sure to bring a smile to your face every time you look at that fluffy face on your wall.   But – it’s your and your pet’s story and we make sure that whichever you choose, studio or on location, we tell it so you never forget the bond you share with your pet.

The goal isn't choosing the "best" location. It's choosing the place where your pet feels happiest and most relaxed.

That's where the best photographs are made.

A Thought to Take Away

The most beautiful portraits don't come from extraordinary locations. They come from allowing your pet to feel comfortable enough to simply be themselves.
